About Christ Presbyterian Church

A Message from Pastor John

We’re glad you’re here and are checking out our website. Christ Presbyterian is a wonderful, Christ-centered church that seeks to speak the “truth in love” to a world desperately in need of God’s forgiveness and grace.

When you come to Christ Presbyterian you’ll find a mixture of all ages — young disciples to those with significantly more life experience. You’ll find folks who will welcome you warmly and make you feel at home. You’ll find people who are just like you with the same joys, concerns, struggles and successes. But, mostly, you’ll find a group of folks who know the transforming power of Jesus Christ and the peace which comes from a renewed relationship with God through Him.

So, join us for worship and/or any of our small groups or studies!

We’ll be looking for you!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor John

Living Life with Christ’s Truth & Love

Christ Presbyterian was founded on the evening of May 21, 2016, at the home of Elder Allen and Susanne Gibbs. The approximate 40 people gathered experienced the powerful movement of the Holy Spirit to step out in faith and form a new congregation centered around the twin poles of Christ’s Truth and Love.

By God’s grace, things took shape very quickly.  Within just a few weeks the church had secured a beautiful place to worship (B’nai Sholom Temple); established an interim Leadership Team of elders; called and hired staff; and made an application to be accepted as a member church in ECO (A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians).  By October the church was officially received into ECO as a member of East Central Presbytery and the first ECO church in West Virginia.

In the meantime, church members were engaging in a variety of ministries in and around the community.  Within the first 18 months of the church’s founding, Christ Presbyterian donated approximately 7,000 lbs. of food to local outreach ministries; established baseline support of 10% of its operating budget toward missions, and pledged monthly financial support to a sister church in a neighboring community as they sought to step out in faith, as well.  By 2018, Christ Presbyterian sent a team of missionaries to Peru, while increasing support for local addiction recovery ministries and various helping agencies in the community.

For the first seven years, Christ Presbyterian met at B’nai Sholom Temple in Huntington. During this time 10% of weekly offerings were set aside as a “building fund” for a future church home. By God’s grace working through the generosity of members and friends, the church was able to purchase its own permanent church building in September 2022. After renovations, the church moved into its new home and celebrated its first worship service there on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023.

God’s faithfulness has been so evident as He has led us throughout this journey. From an initial gathering in someone’s home to the new building we now enjoy, God has blessed us in many ways. Our mission continues to be to stand unapologetically on His Holy Word, declaring the good news of the Gospel, that Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord!

Who We Are

The front cover of our weekly worship bulletin sums it up well. Christ Presbyterian Church is “A joyful community of faith, celebrating life together as Jesus’ disciples.”

As a church, we are part of a genuine community of faith, and our joy comes from being in a personal relationship with God made possible by Jesus’ atoning sacrifice for us on the cross. On the cross, Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves – taking the penalty of sin upon Himself and reconciling us with the Father through His own righteousness. It is out of His great love that we are justified (made right with God), and through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that we are continually being sanctified (growing in spiritual maturity).

As God’s redeemed people we have the privilege of celebrating and sharing life together as a church family. Christ Presbyterian is a “family” in the truest sense. Knowing we are loved and forgiven by God, we love and care for one another and seek ways to make Christ’s love known in our community. Our mission is to, “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything Jesus has commanded” (Matthew 28:19-20). We do this through worship, through small groups and Bible Studies; through prayer; through personal caring and concern; though outreach into our community and beyond; and through a variety of other ways. At the core of it all is simply our desire to know and love Jesus Christ and share His love and mercy with others.

What to Expect

We strive to reflect the love and grace God has shown us in Jesus Christ by not only being a friendly church, but a church that makes room in our lives for others. When you visit you will be warmly welcomed and invited to join us in refreshments and fellowship before our service begins.

Worship is a purposeful mixture of “old” and “new” – where we seek to blend the best of our Christian Reformed heritage with a faithful contemporary approach. We sing traditional classic hymns as well as contemporary favorites. The Lord’s Supper (Communion) is celebrated monthly, and our members share in leadership through liturgy, children’s messages, music, and special ministries. A staffed nursery and children’s ministry is provided where young disciples are cared for and can learn about Jesus in a loving and supportive setting.
